Trade Agreements: AfCFTA

1-day virtual workshop: the African Continental Free Trade Area

AfCFTA training on trade agreements and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA): rules of origin, cumulation and the certificates you need for preferential trade.

About this course

Whether you trade internationally or within South Africa, you should be up to date on the trade agreements that affect your imports and exports. This four-hour workshop follows a published course outline, with short quizzes and a post-workshop evaluation.

The AfCFTA aims to create a single market for goods and services across Africa. Its benefits are not automatic: goods only qualify for preferential duty if they meet the agreement’s rules of origin and the exporter can prove it with the correct certificate. Without that proof, the buyer pays the full rate of duty.

South Africa already trades under several other agreements, including the SADC Free Trade Area, the SADC–EU Economic Partnership Agreement and the SACU–EFTA agreement. Each has its own origin rules and documents, so this AfCFTA training also helps delegates work out which agreement applies to a shipment and what it requires.

Questions about this course

Do delegates need prior experience?

No. A basic understanding of import and export procedures helps.

Is the course online?

Yes. It runs as a live virtual workshop on Zoom from 08h30 to 12h30 or in-house for your team.

What do delegates receive on completion?

A certificate of attendance. The workshop is aligned to SAQA ID 252418/432 at NQF Level 3 (12 credits).

Can this be run in-house for our team?

Yes, as a closed group online or on-site.

Does South Africa trade under the AfCFTA?

Yes. South Africa has ratified the agreement and began trading under AfCFTA preferences in January 2024. Preferences apply only to goods that meet the rules of origin and only with partner countries that are also trading under the agreement. Exporters still need the correct certificate of origin for each shipment.

What is cumulation?

Cumulation lets an exporter count materials from other member countries of the same agreement as originating. This makes it easier for a finished product to qualify for preferential duty and is one of the topics covered in this AfCFTA training.
