Incoterms® 2020

1-day virtual workshop with the new definitions

Our Incoterms 2020 course is a practical workshop on the Incoterms® rules, risks and responsibilities, so importers and exporters allocate cost and liability correctly on every shipment.

About this course

If you are involved in trade, whether international or within South Africa’s borders, you need to take account of the Incoterms® 2020 rules. This Incoterms 2020 course explains the rules and what changed from the previous version.

Incoterms 2020 has 11 rules. Seven can be used for any mode of transport: EXW, FCA, CPT, CIP, DAP, DPU and DDP. Four apply only to sea and inland waterway transport: FAS, FOB, CFR and CIF. Each rule sets out where delivery takes place, when risk passes from seller to buyer and who pays for carriage, insurance and customs clearance.

Choosing the wrong rule is a common and expensive mistake. A seller may quote CIF on a container shipment where FCA or CIP fits better, or agree to DDP without realising it must then handle import clearance and duties in the buyer’s country. In South Africa the choice also matters for customs, because duty is calculated on a value that excludes international freight and insurance.

  • Carriage with own means of transport under FCA, DAP, DPU and DDP
